The flora of Périgord in South-West France is abundant and diverse. In this blog you can find, in pictures, brief encounters with several hundreds of wild flowers and plants as they grow here in French Perigord. Following the seasons other species are added. An index of scientific and English names you find below on the right.

Corine Oosterlee is a botanist and photographer and she offers guided Botanical Walks and other activities around plants and vegetation in nature in Perigord. Do you want to know more? On www.baladebotanique.fr you can find more information. For Corine's photography see www.corineoosterlee.com. Both websites also in English.

about Walks

A Botanical Walk is the pleasure of going on footh along small paths in nature and meeting the wild flora of Perigord. Every walk is different. There is always 'walk' and 'botanical', but the proportions vary.

Proposed Botanical Walks

In the Calendar you'll find dates and descriptions.

There are walks more centred on botanics They are to learn, to understand, to experience. For beginners who want to initiate themselves into botanics. For those who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding. To discover a group of plants or an environment. A morning or afternoon with a small group. Corine will find you an interesting spot and show you the way. We have time to look, to talk, to take pictures... Sometimes there are good surprises. Distance varies between hundreds of metres and about 4 kms.
Sometimes it will be a longer walk. We take beautiful paths often away from the beaten track. On the way we look at interesting plants. The pleasures of discovery !
There are excursions centred 'photography'. To get a good command of your camera, to find a different approach to 'old' subjects. Using natural light, choosing your viewpoint and  composition. To start feeling at ease with your camera or to develop yourself as a photographer in a technical and artistic sense.
At every walk there is the blue box hidden in the woods with its edible and drinkable contents

A quality performance needs a thorough preparation and a careful organisation. Botanical Walks are not expensive but there is a cost. You'll find the prices in the calendar.
For all walks if not otherwise stated :
- Inscription is necessary for activities with a minimum number of participants, for other activities inscription is recommended.
- Children (accompanied by an adult) are welcome and it's free for them.
- Dogs are admitted if well behaved and under their master's control.
- Normally an activity will not be canceled if the weather is bad ; if I need to cancel (dangerous weather like thunderstorms or black ice) you will be contacted.
- Wear shoes you feel you can comfortably walk in and clothes adapted to the weather (hot, cold, wet, sun). Generally botanical walks are not that difficult, some uphill and downhill, sometimes mud, thorny bushes, stones, a fallen tree on the path.
- Acces with a wheelchair or stroller is normally difficult or impossible. Contact me to know the possibilities and alternatives.
- Languages : english, french, dutch. German on demand.

Walks made to measure

And if you want a walk or activity specially for you or your group (family, friends, collegues, class, walking group or other) I can propose you something. The way you want it, and where and when you want it (within certain limits). If necessary in several languages. For a small group or a big one. A quiet ramble or a longer walk. A photo lesson.
We'll look for wild plants in the place you want, in all seasons and (nearly) everywhere is something interesting and surprising to see. Corine shows you the way, explains and informs. We take our time to really look. Half way there is a snack from the blue box hidden in the woods.
Examples:
- A walk on a botanical theme chosen in dialogue with you (as : ferns, how to use a flora, meadow flowers, orchids, horsetails, riverside...)
- Look for the different species of wild plants that grow on your land or in your garden. There are surely more than you think.
- An afternoon with the children in the woods. A hundred years ago people lived here, can we still find out how they lived?
- Macrophotography. In a meadow rich in flowers and small insects waiting to be photographed. Learn how to use your camera, the natural light, tricks and tips. Image analysis afterwards.
- A walk through your village to see all wild plants that grow on the roadside, in the pavement, on walls and in front of houses.
Prices (2016):
€ 60 for 1-4 persons, € 80 for a group, 3 heures (half a day) for an activity at less than 20 km from Trémolat.
For activities farther away and/or that need more elaborate preparations there are extra costs. Ask for an estimate.
See you soon,

Corine
